The Role: Green City Growers, or GCG, is growing and needs a Production Farm
Manager to oversee and manage new Production Farmers for multiple small-scale
production farms around New England. This position is year-round and full time and
involves both hands-on farming tasks as well as leadership duties, including guiding a
team of urban farmers and ensuring the efficiency and productivity of the farms. The
role requires a strong understanding of annual vegetable production, leading farmers
across multiple sites, balancing efficiency and quality, and is excited to take the best of
large-scale agricultural practices and apply them to small-scale farms.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Staff Training:
Help on-board farmers in late March in GCG farming practices, and
maintain training throughout the season in November. Improve the
systems we use to train farmers and encourage to think about continual
improvements in all areas of the job, including crop planning and
customer success.
Staff Management:
Under the direction of the Horticulture Director, directly manage assigned
production farmers, ensuring GCG standards are met.
Manage farmers to maximize efficiency and work with clients to develop
and implement seasonal crop plans and yield estimates, improving
productivity and crop quality.
This job is highly supported by a team of professionals with domain
expertise to ensure the best possible experience and highest quality crops
for employees and customers.
Monitor performance at sites (from a horticultural and customer success
standpoint) and provide feedback to farmers to promote their efficiency
and quality of on-site work, while motivating them and developing their
professional growth.
Farm Support: Join farming staff onsite to work with farmers daily during the
season (training and coaching need to be done in person) and fill in hands on
with farm work as needed. Move quickly, with a sense of urgency, to model best
practices.
Continuous improvement : Is excited to change and grow and explore new best
practices under the guidance of the Horticulture Director
Customer Success:
Build and maintain relationships with customers and partners
Support farmers in leading periodic programs and tours
Record Keeping & Reporting:
Check direct reports’ record keeping and ensure that visits are
documented properly.
Audit documentation by farmers to ensure appropriate record keeping
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who will work independently using
skills gained from in-house training, possess excellent communication skills, a
positive attitude, and maintain a keen sense of personal responsibility.
Detail-oriented, with a commitment to high quality work and continuous
improvement.
Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
At least 3 years of farming experience.
Ability to work a schedule that is based on site needs (early mornings, long
days).
Ability to perform physically challenging work in all weather conditions. Ability
to move up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
Requires daily driving in a company vehicle, up to 3 hours or more, during the
season. Driver's license and good driving record required. Following a
conditional offer of employment, GCG may require a motor vehicle record check
on all final candidates.
A background check may be required.
