Job Description

Court Reporter – Travis County Job Summary: Records, transcribes, and maintains records of court proceedings. Furnishes transcripts to requesting parties. Provides and maintains equipment (stenographic machine, computers, software, printers) and reference materials necessary for duties. This position serves as the official court reporter for the 403rd District Court under Judge Brandy Mueller. Responsibilities Attends court sessions and records all proceedings, evidence, objections, rulings, voir dire, and arguments. Compiles full records of jury arguments and voir dire examinations as requested by attorneys, including all objections, rulings, and remarks. Documents files with court exhibits and indexes, preserves shorthand or machine notes, and prepares transcripts for appeals or future proceedings. Prepares official transcripts of all evidence or proceedings, certifying accuracy, and responds to transcript requests. Act as liaison to attorneys, judges, county departments, staff, officials, and the public, providing information related to hearings and charges. May conduct depositions of witnesses, receive, execute, and return commissions, and prepare certificates of proceedings in any county within the judicial district. May prepare jury charges in civil cases. Provides administrative support duties as assigned to court functions. Minimum Requirements Must pass two proficiency tests: 180 wpm literary 200 wpm jury charge 225 wpm Q&A (depending on dictation type) Certification exam: Part A requires ≥ 95 % accuracy; Part B requires ≥ 75 % accuracy. Certified by the Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) in Texas. Complete continuing education as mandated by the Texas Supreme Court. Preferred Qualifications Graduation from an accredited Court Reporting school. At least 2 years of experience as a Certified Court Reporter. Knowledge of Machine shorthand theory and minimum standards for certification. Texas law and court procedures, terminology, record‑keeping practices, and decorum. Federal, state, local, and county laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines related to court reporting. Computer applications and hardware relevant to performance of essential functions. Confidential handling of health information as required by federal and state laws. Skills Coordinating and prioritizing independent work. Effective verbal and written communication. Abilities Apply correct English grammar, spelling, and terminology. Record, transcribe, and maintain accurate court proceedings. Listen attentively for extended periods. Operate a stenotype machine to produce official records. Maintain professionalism under stress. Pursue continuing education for professional growth. Establish and maintain effective relationships with clientele, agencies, and the public. Work Environment & Other Information Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 10–25 pounds and extensive periods of sitting, typing, writing, and listening. Requires continual contact with accused or convicted individuals, and a stressful court environment. Work hours: 8 am–5 pm, Monday–Friday. May work some holidays, nights, and weekends.
